Using Discounted Gift Cards To Pay For Your Disney Trip

Updated: Aug 17
It's no secret that planning a vacation with The Mouse can sometimes cost an arm and a leg. In a world where the price of everything continutes to climb, trying to find the best bang for your buck is a must! So when it comes to Disney, how can you find ways to put a few extra dollars back in your pocket?

The answer is buying Disney gift cards!
Did you know that places like Target and Sam's Club offer discounts (usually around 5%) when buying Disney gift cards with your membership or Target Circle Card? In addition, you can pay for almost every aspect of your Disney trip with Disney gift cards. This includes your hotel and tickets, as well as souvineirs and dining at Disney owned locations!
Target Circle Card
Formally known as the Red Card, Target offers a 5% discount on most purchases when you pay using your Target Circle Card, and yes, this applies to Disney gift cards as well! My wife (and if I'm buying honest, myself included!) constantly finds herself shopping at target for various items, and while 5% doesn't sound like alot, it quickly adds up! This is especially true when making big purchases, like say........a Disney vacation!
Target has two different options when it comes to it's Circle Card: a debit and credit option. While both provide you with the same 5% discount, they work a little diffirently.
Target Circle Credit Card
The Target Circle Credit Card boasts no annual fee and a chance for up to 100$ in Circle Rewards. Circle Rewards can be used in the form of checkout deals, coupons, birthday perks and more. Additionally, you can use this card everywhere MasterCard is accepted, and will earn 2% back on gas and dining and 1% back on all other purchases.
The potential downside here is that you'll first need to apply and your credit score will take a hit. For us, this option doesn't make the most sense. While we are avid Target shoppers, we've never been keen on credit cards tied to a specific store or brands as they tend to limit the way you can use your rewards. That said, if you don't mind using your perks soley at Target, and are looking to build credit along the way, this might be the way to go!
My personal take: I would pass on this credit card, as there are other cards with much better rewards systems overall.
Target Circle Debit Card
This is the much simplier and quicker option if you want to avoid a credit check, and the one I would reccommend. While there is still an application process for this card, the approval odds here, are much higher. This card will be linked directly to your personal bank account and will have the 5% discount attached to it, however it can ONLY be used at Target.
This option is great for any Target shoppers, especially those looking for discounts on gift cards!

Sam's Club Membership
My wife and I are also members of Sam's club. Between the savings you can find on gas and household/grocery items, this membership quickly pays for itself. In addition, Sam's Club also offers some fantastic discounts on Disney gift cards throughout the year!
The process here is simple: sign up and pay your annual membership to be a Sam's Club member! That's it!
While Sam's Club offers a couple of different membership options, the tier of membership you have does not affect your discount on gift cards, or other goods, at all. At the time of this writing (8/17/26), the Club is currently offering membership as low as $25!
While the standard discount on Disney gift cards can range from 3-5%, it can soar as high as 10% during certain promotions or specials, mainly Black Friday. And when you think about the total cost of a disney trip: hotel, park tickets, souvineirs and food, 10% can make a noticeable dent!
The downside here is that the bigger savings are reserved mainly for days like Black Friday, and while the 10% discount is awesome, they typically restrict the number of gift cards you can buy as well as have a limited supply available for purchase. In addition, due to the competitive nature of these sales, they tend to run out of cards quickly, so you'll need to make sure your keeping up with promotions and in line early!

Bringing it together
Now that we've discussed your options for saving on Disney gift cards, let's apply this to your Disney trip.
Let's assume the average cost is around $7,000 for a family of four to spend one week at disney, visiting all four parks, eating at quick-service dining options every day with a few, more epensive Table service options mixed in, and spending money.
If we use gift cards bought at Target for a 5% discount, that $7,000 trip can be knocked down to $6,650 for a total savings of $350! That's extra money in your pocket, or that can be spent on airline tickets, car rentals, etc.
If we assume the same figures, but this time factor in buying gift cards at Sam's Club during Black Friday for a 10% savings, that same $7,000 trip now costs $6,300 for a potential savings of $700!
A Word To The Wanderers
No matter what way you spin it, Disney vacations are not cheap. This makes savings in any form an absolute must, especially for those on a budget! Disney gift cards are a great way to put a few extra bucks back in your savings, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention the potential for one glaring drawback when paying for your vacation with gift cards.
Caution!
Paying with gift cards is a great way to save money, but this also means your money is tied up in the event you can't go on your trip!
While Disney is awesome about working with you to change dates of hotel stays and park tickets, sometimes in life there's those moments where we just need to cancel altogether. In those instances, if you've paid with gift cards, this means that your money will be reloaded back onto a gift card.
If you plan to visit Disney again in the future, this might not be a huge problem, as Disney gift cards do not expire and can be used anytime in the future. But if you're needing the physical money from the vacation to be allocated elsewhere, that unfortunatley can't happen. Disney generally can only issue refunds in the form of the original payment method, so always be sure that, when paying with gift cards, you'll either be going on the trip, or can afford to have your money tied to gift cards until you do!
Conclusion
Buying discounted Disney gift cards to pay for your Disney trip is a method that my family and I swear by and have been doing for years! It's one of the ways we can afford to go so often! While 5% may not seem like much, it will quickly add up when factoring in the total cost of your vacation. Of course nothing beats the savings of promotional deals on hotels and tickets that I as your travel agent can find (shameless plug), but this is another great way to keep money in your pocket and out of the hands of The Mouse!
